Lost Ring search in southern France

Here is (in part) an e-mail I received a couple of days ago…

“I’ve only just learned about Ring Finders and am so excited that such a service        exists. I wish I had known sooner.  I lost my wedding band in the Mediterranean on Monday (July 29th). I imagine sooner is better than later when looking for lost rings in the Sea, but, based on your experience, is there a chance you could find it despite the lost time? Do rings tend to move towards the shore with the wave movement or do they move “sideways” across the sea?

It was lost on a beach near ******. I can get you details as to where we were, time of day, how deep we were, water movement, etc. If, however, you think this particular search would be futile, I have had my mourning time and am reconciled to eventually replacing it.  But if there’s a chance…”

Despite overwhelming odds of getting this report 5 days later, I did search the area. The party was not able to be present as he was traveling back to his home in another country. He did send me a google map  outlining an area of about 150 meters long and covering about 100 meters wide (into the sea). The beach is heavily attended, somewhat heavy surf and many people search with metal detectors.  Unfortunately, I was not able to find the ring (I did find two other rings, coins, etc.).

Even though this report was received very late, I still made 3 different attempts (3 trips) to locate the ring (1  1/2 hr drive to the beach).  If you lose a ring, make sure to contact theringfinders.com promptly and DON’T GIVE UP HOPE.  We’ll be there to assist you.

Lost earring in Toulon, France

Yesterday, I went to the beaches in Toulon. I decided to use the BHID instead of the Surf PI (I alternate them). After 3-4 hrs of detecting the wind increased I decided to  go home. This beach is lined with several restaurants and since it was lunch time, all of the outside tables were full of people. As I walked back to the car, I continued to  detect along the sandy beach passing one of the restaurants. Shortly after passing the restaurant, I heard a woman trying to get my attention. After removing my earphones, I listened to her story about her granddaughter (about 8 yrs old) who had just lost one of her earrings on the beach near the restaurant and she asked if I would try to find it.

We walked back to the beach area where the granddaughter lost it (about a 12′ x12′ area). It was deep white sand and I asked to see the other earring. It was soooo small. Although it was a difficult challenge I decided to try. The earring was in a silver outline of a heart (just a heart on a post for pierced ears). You could see by the look on the granddaughter’s face, she was really broken hearted (no pun intended). I told the grandmother that it would be a difficult search due to the conditions and the very small piece of jewelry. I found several targets (junk) and sifted the sand as best I could with no luck. After about 10 minutes, I still had not found the the girl’s lost heart. Grandmother rejoined her husband at the lunch table (not more than 15′ away) as did the granddaughter. All the other customers knew what was going on and you could tell that they did not believe there would be a happy ending. Shortly thereafter, I followed up on a rather good signal very carefully. All of a sudden, I caught just a little glimmer of something shiny.. I reached down and carefully moved some of the sand and there it was… A REALLY small  heart shaped silver earring. I interrupted the luncheon with, “Madame”. She came over to me and I handed her (to her disbelief) her granddaughter’s earring. The granddaughter was clearly pleased and I smiled. The grandmother immediately told the other luncheon crowd that I had found her granddaughter’s earring.
I am pleased that I was able to find this very small, but important, earring for this young girl. You could see that she was really pleased to have this item back where it belonged.
If I could find this item, then I am sure that I can find other lost items for you. Call me.

Helping others…even during vacations in another country!

Returning home to France from vacation, we stopped on the coast of Italy. I decided to take my metal detector with me in case I had a chance to do some detecting. We were in a town called Sanremo near the french border and the weather was great. While ‘tecting’ at a small beach, I came upon 5 young men were acting very excited and some of them were laughing. They motioned me to come over to their area indicating they had just lost something and asked if I could help (through some difficult problems with communication since I only speak english and french). They said that one of the 5 had just lost 2 gold wedding bands.  Unfortunately, they were not sure the exact location (the water was about 3 ½ ft deep). I did a grid pattern based upon their story. However, after 40 minutes of searching, I only found several coins. All but one of the men left to go ashore thinking the rings were not going to be found. However, one of the men urged me to a different location (he thought the others were not correct on their ‘site’). Well, he was right. Within 2 minutes or so, I found one of the rings and then it took only a couple of more minutes to find the other one.. Needless to say, the entire group (plus MANY onlookers on the shore) were very happy that I located the rings. I still don’t speak italian but I understood them perfectly.
