It started as a joyful Sunday—sunlight, laughter, and a three-year-old named Ava running freely across the artificial turf at Hardy Middle School near Georgetown in Washington, D.C. For her parents, Yoon and Mark, it was just another happy family outing. But by the end of the day, that carefree moment would turn into a stressful and emotional search for something far more meaningful than jewelry.

When the family returned home, they made a heartbreaking discovery: Ava’s necklace—along with six sentimental gold pendants—was gone. This wasn’t just any necklace. It was a living collection of memories. Each pendant had been carefully chosen during family travels abroad—tokens of love, milestones, and shared experiences. Among them was a particularly cherished piece: a Tiffany and Co. Elsa Peretti open heart pendant in 18 karat yellow gold, purchased in New York City as a memento of a special trip.

The Search Begins

Yoon and Mark immediately rushed back to the soccer field at Hardy Middle School, hoping to retrace their daughter’s steps. But despite their efforts, the artificial turf revealed nothing. The pendants seemed to have vanished.

Determined, Yoon reached out to a friend for help. The friend returned to the field and managed to recover the broken chain and two pendants—but the remaining pieces, including the treasured Tiffany heart, were still missing. That’s when Yoon and Mark turned to The Ring Finders, an international network of metal detectorists specializing in recovering lost valuables. Through the directory, they connected with metal detectorist Brian Rudolph of METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC.

A Methodical Recovery

Brian arranged to meet early the next morning. Leaving his home at 5:15 a.m., he arrived at the field by 6:15 a.m., where Yoon was already waiting. After identifying the area where Ava had been playing, Brian got to work. Using a systematic grid-search method, he carefully scanned the artificial turf lane by lane. Yoon assisted by helping reposition the grid lines as the search progressed—a true team effort driven by hope.

Within the first hour, success. A signal rang out—and there it was: the beautiful 14-karat yellow gold heart-shaped pendant from Tiffany & Co.. A small piece of metal, but a massive emotional victory.

The Difficult Reality

Brian continued searching for another hour, but no additional pendants were found. With school now in session, he had to pause the search.

Later that day, he returned—picking up exactly where he left off. For another three and a half hours, he meticulously scanned the field, covering nearly half of a full soccer field.

Despite the thorough effort, no other pendants were recovered. It’s likely that the remaining pieces had already been picked up—perhaps spotted by someone noticing the glint of gold against the turf.

Closure and Gratitude

While the outcome wasn’t complete, it was meaningful. Yoon and Mark were deeply grateful—not only because one of their most sentimental pendants had been recovered, but because they now had closure. Knowing the remaining items were no longer on the field allowed them to stop wondering and begin moving forward. For Brian, the long day ended with tired legs but a full heart. Helping reunite even one cherished item with its rightful owners made every step across that field worthwhile.

Sometimes, it’s not about recovering everything—it’s about recovering what matters most.
