I got a call Saturday afternoon from Eduardo who was calling to see if I could help him retrieve a very important bracelet from the water at Avila Beach. As fate would have it, my wife and I were heading up that way the next day for a two day trip so I told him I would come and look for it either Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning depending on which low tide was best. It had been lost about 25 yards off shore but the beach at Avila is a long flat beach so I knew if the tide was low I could walk out in knee high water for quite a ways so I knew I had a shot at it.
Early Monday was the best so I hit the beach at 5:30am hoping no other detectorists would be out searching at that time and I had the beach to myself. My only directions were he had lost it between the two light poles on the pier (about 200 feet) and around 200-400 feet north of the pier. With a huge search area I decided to divide the beach up into quadrants and begin gridding the water. Even though El Niño has warmed the waters he seemed to have skipped Avila as it was cold and I was freezing but I had a bracelet to find! After about a half hour I finally got a 6-7 on the Minelab Manticore which is perfect for gold bracelets and so I waited for the wave to pass, sent in my CKG scoop and pulled out a scoop full of sand crabs and one very important gold bracelet!
This wasn’t just any gold bracelet but a family heirloom. It had been given to Eduardo’s son years ago from his late Uncle who had passed 30 years ago. It’s a great reminder that it isn’t always just a gold bracelet or ring but rather a daily reminder of someone who is no longer with us. Every recovery is special even if I have to get soaked and frozen before the sun comes up.
