Matt and Jane had an exciting project in mind for their backyard—they wanted to build their very own pickleball court! Before breaking ground, however, they wanted to locate the existing property markers along the right side of their home so they could better understand their property layout while planning the project.

Interestingly, my connection with Matt began with an entirely different metal detecting search.

I originally met Matt at a local park while searching for his friend’s lost wedding band. After successfully recovering the ring, Matt was impressed with the capabilities of professional metal detecting and asked me a question I hear quite often:

“Do you also find buried property markers?”

I told him that I certainly do! Locating lost and buried property markers is one of the services I regularly provide through my business, METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC.

We arranged a time for me to come to Matt and Jane’s property and search for the missing markers along the right side of their house.

The Search for the Buried Property Markers

Property markers can become surprisingly difficult to locate over the years. They may be several inches below the surface, covered by soil and grass, or simply forgotten as landscaping and other changes take place around a property.

Using my professional metal detecting equipment and search techniques, I began carefully searching the areas where the existing markers were believed to be located.

The search was successful!

I located two buried property markers toward the front of the property—one was a corner marker, while the other was an intermediate marker. Finding these existing markers provided Matt with valuable reference points as he continued planning the location of his backyard pickleball court.

It is important to note that locating an existing property marker with a metal detector is not the same as conducting a professional land survey or legally establishing a property boundary. When an exact legal boundary determination is required, a licensed land surveyor should always be consulted.

Another Successful Property Marker Search!

One of the things I enjoy most about professional metal detecting is that every search is different. Sometimes I am searching for a treasured wedding ring that was lost only hours earlier. Other times, I am searching for property markers that may have been buried and unseen for decades.
In Matt and Jane’s case, I was very happy to help them locate these two important reference points as they prepared for their backyard project.
And now the really exciting part has begun—their new pickleball court is officially breaking ground!

It was a pleasure helping Matt and Jane with this stage of their project, and I hope their new court brings them, their family, and their friends many years of fun and great memories.

Years of Family Memories Saved! Lost iPhone 15 Pro Max Recovered from a Maryland Pond

  • from Washington (District of Columbia, United States)

BJ’s Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max recovered from a private pond by metal detectorist, Brian Rudolph of METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC and THE RING FINDERS

CJ’s girlfriend’s father Wayne gladly poses with the recovered iPhone that Brian Rudolph was able to scoop up from the bottom of a gaithersburg, Maryland pond

CJ was having a fun time fishing at a pond near his house. Unfortunately, his luck ran out when he put his backpack over his shoulder and suddenly heard something fall out of the backpack, hit the dock, and splash into the water.

Moments later, he realized what had happened—his Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max had fallen into the pond!

CJ felt completely helpless. He wasn’t about to go into the water, and even though he searched everywhere he could through the relatively clear pond water, he could not see his phone anywhere.

This is where CJ’s girlfriend, Brittany, comes into the story.

The phone contained an enormous number of precious memories that had never been backed up. In fact, CJ had not backed up years’ worth of photos and other data. Memories from CJ and Brittany’s years together—including their time dating and the birth and early years of their beloved child—could potentially be lost forever if the phone could not be recovered and its data retrieved.

Brittany immediately went online looking for someone who might be able to help CJ recover the phone. That’s when she discovered an international directory of metal detectorists called THE RING FINDERS.

Through THE RING FINDERS, Brittany found me, Brian Rudolph, owner of METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC in Maryland. She also learned that I specialize in recovering items lost in water.

When I spoke with Brittany late one night, she was extremely upset about the possibility of losing all of those irreplaceable memories. I told her there was a good chance that I could help recover the phone, and I explained the different options available for conducting the search. She agreed to move forward with the recovery.

At first, it appeared that I might have to scuba dive while metal detecting for the phone. However, when I went to the site to survey the pond, dock, and surrounding water, I lowered a weight attached to a rope to determine the depth. My assessment showed that I could probably wade around the immediate area of the dock. Approximately five feet beyond the dock, however, the bottom abruptly dropped to an estimated eight feet or more, which would require scuba equipment.

On the day of the search, I loaded my vehicle with all of the necessary equipment for both wading and scuba diving. I had to dodge a couple of storms before finally making my way to the pond, where I met Brittany’s very kind father, Wayne, who would oversee the search.

I got into my scuba gear, grabbed my sand scoop and waterproof metal detector, and headed into the extremely swampy, muddy, silty water. The pond was filled with tall grass as I slowly made my way toward the end of the dock.

I metal detected the entire area as I moved farther out toward the deeper section of the pond. Initially, there were no signals that interested me.

Eventually, I reached the left front corner of the dock. The water became considerably deeper, but I was still able to keep my head above the surface. My water boots sank quite far into the thick mud below, but I managed to maintain my balance while swinging the coil of my metal detector across the bottom.

Then, I finally hit a very attractive signal!

It sounded very similar to the response I would expect from a cell phone using this particular metal detector. I lowered my scoop to the location of the target and tried several times to capture the object, but every attempt came up empty.

Eventually, I gave it another try, hoping I wouldn’t accidentally push the object farther toward the deep end of the pond.

Afterward, I scanned the bottom again with my detector.

The signal was gone!

That was a very good sign. Apparently, whatever had been producing the signal was finally inside my scoop.

I slowly brought the scoop up and out of the water.

And there it was—CJ’s black iPhone 15 Pro Max, completely covered in mud and silt!

I was so happy, and so was Brittany’s dad! Wayne let out a loud “Congratulations!” and I joined in the celebration as we congratulated one another on the successful recovery.

As soon as I made my way out of the water, Wayne contacted his daughter. We all celebrated together while Brittany was on the phone.

It was a wonderful moment.

I had been able to help this family recover something that represented far more than the monetary value of an expensive smartphone. Inside that muddy iPhone were years of precious family memories that otherwise might have been lost forever.

Brittany and Wayne were extremely grateful and relieved that their decision to move forward with a professional underwater metal detecting search had resulted in the successful recovery of CJ’s lost iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Another successful water recovery for METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC and THE RING FINDERS!

Cartier Wedding Band Recovered from a Sacred Mikvah Pool in Maryland

Andrew’s 18K yellow gold Cartier classic-style wedding band which ring finder Brian Rudolph successfully recovered from a Baltimore retreat Center mikvah pool

Andrew had driven five hours from Long Island City, New York, to attend a spiritual retreat and renewal conference at a beautiful retreat center near Baltimore, Maryland.

During a break between conference sessions, he decided to take a peaceful walk through the woods. The trail led him to a picturesque creek that flowed into a natural mikvah pool—a serene body of water where guests could immerse themselves for relaxation or for personal spiritual reflection and purification.

Sadly, while enjoying the peaceful surroundings, Andrew felt his classic 18K yellow gold Cartier wedding band slip off his finger and disappear into the deep water below. The ring quickly sank to the rocky bottom of the mikvah pool, which was approximately six feet deep in the center.

Andrew repeatedly duck-dived in an attempt to recover his treasured wedding band, but despite his best efforts, the ring remained hidden beneath the stones.

Not knowing where else to turn, Andrew searched online for help. That’s when he discovered THE RING FINDERS, the elite international directory of metal detectorists who specialize in recovering lost rings and other valuable items.

It was a pleasure speaking with Andrew, and I was eager to help. Time was critical because he would be leaving the retreat the following morning to return home to Long Island. We both hoped there would be enough time to recover the ring before his departure.

Andrew introduced me to one of the conference coordinators, who graciously helped arrange access to the property and provided all of the details I needed for the recovery. She was incredibly supportive and did everything she could to make the search possible.

The following day, I arrived at the retreat center with my equipment. My plan was to first attempt the recovery using lightweight water-detecting gear. If the water proved to be too deep to safely stand, I would return with scuba equipment for a full underwater recovery.

The hike to the mikvah pool was longer than I expected, with several uphill sections along the way. The temperature was hovering around 95 degrees, and I could certainly feel the heat as we made our way through the woods. Thankfully, the shaded trail offered some relief before we reached the beautiful natural pool.

The setting was absolutely breathtaking—quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by nature. As we arrived at the water’s edge, we were pleasantly surprised to see Andrew and one of his colleagues, who had managed to step away from the conference to watch the search.

I put on my lightweight neoprene wetsuit and dive boots, assembled my detector, grabbed my scoop, and slowly entered the cool water.

Making my way toward the center of the mikvah pool, I positioned myself as close as possible to where Andrew believed the ring had slipped from his finger. Since Andrew is much taller than I am, we were concerned that I might not be able to stand in the same location. If the water became just a little deeper, scuba gear would be necessary.

Just before the water reached above my neck, my detector gave a beautiful, solid signal.

I had found something.

Barely able to keep my footing, I carefully dug one scoop of rocks from the bottom. As I sifted through the stones with my hands, I suddenly noticed a flash of yellow gold peeking through the pile.

There it was!

Andrew’s beautiful Cartier wedding band had been sitting in the scoop the entire time.

I was especially thankful that I always inspect every scoop carefully before dumping it back into the water. Whether searching on land or underwater, that simple habit has saved countless recoveries over the years.

Andrew was absolutely thrilled. His colleague and the conference coordinator were equally excited as they witnessed the successful recovery unfold before their eyes. What had seemed nearly impossible only a day earlier had become a joyful reality.

After celebrating the recovery with hugs and heartfelt expressions of gratitude, the four of us made the walk back to the retreat center together. We shared our goodbyes, reflected on the adventure, and gave thanks for such a wonderful outcome.

It was a beautiful experience from beginning to end, and I was grateful for the opportunity to help yet another person recover something truly irreplaceable.
