I received a message around lunchtime from Monica, wondering if I would be able to recover her ring from the bay.
Monica explained that she and her family had been crabbing when her ring slipped off her finger, bounced off the dock, and landed about a foot out from the dock, right where she had been sitting in a chair. She said the water was about five feet deep.
I told her that these types of recoveries can be very tricky. Fishing and crabbing areas are usually loaded with all kinds of junk—hooks, sinkers, cans, bottle caps, and plenty of other metal debris. Five feet of water is also getting close to the maximum depth I can comfortably search, but I agreed to take on the hunt.
I couldn’t make it out there until later, and Monica would already be gone, so I asked her to take some pictures showing the exact location where she had been sitting. That way, I could pinpoint the search area when I arrived.
Later that day, I suited up and carefully worked the area around the dock. The first good signal I came across sounded promising, but unfortunately, it wasn’t Monica’s ring. I kept working my way through the area, digging signal after signal after signal.
After about 35 minutes of searching, I got another signal that sounded especially sweet.
Sure enough, there it was—Monica’s beautiful ring!
This one took a lot of work to recover. Crabbing and fishing areas are notorious for being filled with metal junk, making it difficult to separate the good signals from everything else lying on the bottom.
But persistence pays off!
