One second you’re grabbing the sunscreen to lather up the kids, and the next, you watch a priceless multi-generational gold band shoot off your finger like a rocket. Total panic. That was the nightmare Tyler faced just minutes after stepping onto ๐๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐๐๐๐ก in Kennebunkport Maine for what was supposed to be a relaxing morning.
Before they could even unpack a single beach chair, disaster struck. โ๏ธ๐๏ธ
As the family unpacked, Tyler did what any good dad doesโhe grabbed the sun protection to start lathering up himself and the kids. Knowing that sunscreen and jewelry donโt mix, he went to slide his gold wedding ring off his finger for safekeeping.
In a split second, the unthinkable happened.
The ring caught the air, slipped, and shot right off his finger, flying through the air and completely disappearing into the endless abyss of the soft beach sand. ๐จ๐
A frantic family search immediately ensued. Everyone was down on their hands and knees, sifting through the grains, desperately hoping for a glint of gold. But as we all know, once a ring plunges into the dry beach sand, it vanishes completely from sight. Realizing they might just be burying it deeper or shifting it further away, they wisely stopped.

When we spoke, Tyler was incredibly helpful. He kept his wits about him and knew exactly where he had been standing, plus the general trajectory of where the ring had gone airborne. But then, he shared a detail that gave me actual goosebumps.

Losing a wedding ring is stressful enough, but losing a multi-generational family heirloom carries a completely different kind of weight. The stakes were officially raised, and there was no way I was going to let this piece of history stay buried in the sand.
Cheryl and I loaded up the gear, pointed the Ring Finder Mobile toward Kennebunkport Maine , and stepped on the gas…
When we arrived, the beach was actually beautifully quiet and peaceful. Being mid-morning on August 30th, the height of the summer rush had cleared out, giving us plenty of room to operate without a crowd.
We were met by Tyler, who led us down to the sand and straight to the exact location where the ring was lost. He took a deep breath and reenacted the entire scene for us, pointing out his exact footing and tracing the arc of the flying ring with his hand. Having that visual reference is everything.
Once the trajectory was locked in, there was no more talking left to do. It was time to get to work.
The area itself was very small, but we had a bit of a hurdle to clear first. There were several beach accessories scattered right over the drop zone that were made with metal parts. Itโs ironic, but the absolute worst enemy of a metal detector is other metal! The machine will pick up all of those surrounding metal objects, which can easily mask a gold ring and hide it from the coil.
The best thing to do in that situation is simple: get all the outside metal completely out of the area.
Once we cleared the clutter and moved everything aside, the search resumed. I fired up the Minelab Manticore, dialed in the settings for the dry sand, and swung the coil to the ground. The hunt was officially on.
Within just one minute, the Manticore sang out. I received the exact tone and Target Identification (TID) number I had been hoping forโa very nice, solid low tone with a TID of 28. That number is definitely in the gold range! ๐จโจ
By this time, Tyler’s kids were watching closely and getting all excited. I looked at them and asked if they wanted to help me find the ring by digging in the sand right where my detector was pointing.
They were more than happy to do that! Talk about a real-life beach treasure hunt for actual goldโa young boy’s absolute dream. The two brothers went for it without needing to be asked twice, their hands flying through the sand.
All of a sudden, Teddy, the younger boy, feels something, pulls a shiny gold ring straight out of the sand, and yells, “๐๐จ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฒ!” right as his older brother yells at the top of his lungs, “๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐. ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐!” ๐ฅณ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ
