Lost Silver Ring Recovered in Bay – Calf-Deep Recovery Success at the Jersey Shore

Matthew reached out to me wondering if I could help locate his lost ring in the bay. After talking through the details, this recovery sounded very doable.
He had been standing in calf-deep water along the shoreline while playing catch with his kids. When the football hit his hand, his ring popped off and landed in the water. Fortunately, he was confident it happened in a small 10×10 area—no more than five feet from the edge of a fixed pier, which made it much easier to pinpoint the exact spot.
He believed the ring was gold, so I scanned the area carefully, ignoring high VDI signals (which typically indicate silver or coins, not gold). After covering the whole area and coming up empty-handed, I asked him again if he was sure the ring was gold. That’s when he admitted he wasn’t 100% certain.
So I decided to check one of the high signals I had previously passed over—just in case it was silver. Sure enough, after two scoops, his beautiful silver ring was in my scoop!
This was a textbook recovery made possible by one key factor: location certainty. When someone knows exactly where they lost their ring—especially in the water—the chances of a successful recovery increase dramatically. Many times, people only realize their ring is missing later and can’t be sure where it came off. That wasn’t the case here, and it made all the difference.
