Lost Wedding Ring in the Swimming Hole- FOUND in Whitewater, CA

  • from Corona (California, United States)

We’ve been having an extreme heat wave in Southern California. So, what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon when it’s 100+ degrees outside than with the family at the swimming hole on the Whitewater River by Palm Springs.
Janeth messaged me saying she needed help with a lost item. She went on to say it was her wedding ring that was lost in about 2′-3′ of water in the swimming hole while she was playing with her young daughter.

I met up with Janeth and her dad and followed them to where the swimming hole was. Once we got to the shady trees next to the river, she pointed out the swimming hole where people have semi-dammed the river in two spots to create an area with a slow current of water passing over the dam and through. The area was about 25 yards in length and maybe 15 yards wide, and she had no idea where the ring fell off within it.

I started my search at one end where it was dammed off and slowly worked my way across the width of the swimming hole. I continued working the width back and forth and eventually made my way to the other end where the second dam was. It was, in fact, about three feet deep.

Only a few bottle caps and tin foil. It had been about two and a half hours searching so far. Seeing the look on Janeth’s face when I told her I wasn’t having any luck made me re-think the search. I changed some settings on my detector and started the whole search over again in the same way as the first…side to side. After about 3/4 of the way through the search, I got a very strong signal near the shore. I had my beach sand scoop and pushed it down into the mud/dirt. After two attempts, I was only getting rocks. The signal was still down there. Third time was a charm and I found this beautiful ring in the bottom of my scoop. I was hoping it was hers and not someone else’s.

I kept the ring hidden in my hand and I got out of the water. I walked over to the shade trees where Janeth and her dad were trying to stay cool. I told her I failed to ask her what the ring looked like. She quickly brought up a photo on her phone (it was it!). As we’re standing there looking at her phone, I brought up my hand with the ring and put it next to the picture and said “I think this is it!” I always love the happy reaction they have! She thanked me over and over and asked me if she could give me a hug. I told her I was wet, but it didn’t matter. Hug accepted!
