It was late in the evening when I received a phone call from a young man who told me he lost a very expensive, very sentimental, and very large gold chain off the dock at Wonnock lake in Maple Ridge. I was heading to another search in Vancouver when he called, after hearing his story and the fact that he was going to sleep on the dock until morning to make sure nobody came back to get it, I knew I had to act fast.

I do not dive and I really don’t know many people who do in Vancouver that can use a metal detector underwater so this got me thinking I had to go and grab some treble Hooks and Jimmy rig some way to try to hook it under the water as I knew it was gonna be over my head and it was 7 1/2 – 8 feet of water.

The fact that some people knew he had lost it that day made us all little nervous I got there 7 AM in the morning and there was three people fishing off the dock, I set up and started my search with the hook in line but after three hours I knew I had to find a diver for this young man. Not long ago I had a phone call from someone who was looking for help to find a lost ring in 15 feet of water, after talking to him I decided to lend him my underwater equipment as I do not dive.

Sadly he did not find the ring, but he said anytime you need help looking for something call me, this stuck out in my mind as I was thinking of who I could find to help, my first thought was my member in Kamloops but he’s hard to get a hold of so I reached out to this young man.

Surprisingly he rearranged his whole day to come out and help us and he was the reason this young man’s got his beautiful custom made gold chain back. The great thing was, Stan who found it, got to experience what I experience all the time and that is the excitement and joy of returning something back to someone and seeing how it affects their lives.

You see this chain was made up of gold from this young man’s brother, uncle and grandfather, who sadly had all passed away. You can never get something like that back even if it was insured which I believe it wasn’t. It was so nice to see how happy Justin was when he saw his chain again for the first time in over 14 hours. It was equally exciting to see how happy it made Stan to return it back to him. Win-win for everyone!
