San Rafael search for Grandfather’s Mason Ring Narrows Possibilities, San Rafael, CA 94901

  • from Portland (Oregon, United States)

Not all searches yield the hoped for results. Sometimes all we can do is to determine where the missing item is not located.

That was the case when Howard called me to report that his Grandfather’s 32nd degree Mason’s ring, possibly similar to the one shown below,  had been lost on a walk around his mother’s neighborhood, or on his drive home.

Mason's 32nd degree ring 1

There were several possible places the ring could have ended up.

1. Along the sidewalk around his block. 2. In a neighbor’s trash container along the way where Howard had deposited a gift from his dog. 3. In a football size athletic field at the end of his walk and 4. In his vehicle after his walk.

Howard had already placed notes in all the neighbor’s mailboxes along his walking path, (this is always a good idea) so as we rewalked his path, we did another visual search of the sidewalks, as I scanned the bushes and flowerbeds with my detector. No luck.

On to the football field where Howard and his wife Monique lined out three 400′ x 8′ search corridors across the field with colored mason’s string, which they supplied. Howard walked along to keep me company as I methodically detected the long grass corridors and the final path up to his mother’s back door. We didn’t find his ring there either, but enjoyed a very pleasant conversation on a beautiful cool sunny afternoon.

Afterwards, Howard made one more search of his car, but no luck. So we had to conclude that his ring had slipped off in the neighbor’s trash can, and was probably long gone. Not a very fun outcome!

Howard is a lovely and generous fellow, and as always, when a search is not successful, I shared his sense of loss and frustration. But I told him to never give up hope, because sometimes there are other explanations for where lost things may have ended up. It’s happened before!
