It was William and best friend Irv’s, 4th trip back to Tunitas Creek Beach to look for his cross. It had belonged to his Lebanese uncle and been in the family for generations. Lost while playing football on the previous Saturday, the family treasure remained elusive after three searches, first in the dead of night with a $100 metal detector, and then two trips with a rented Whites. lack of experience detecting, and unfamiliarity with detectors themselves, left them frustrated and tired; so they decided to bring in a pro.

It’s a 20 minute hike to the beach through some rough brush and missing trail. There were people living there. It was a little spooky even in the daytime.  I was surprised  the boys had hiked it at night with only their cellphone lights.

But its worth the hike because Tunitas Creek has a really big beautiful white sandy beach, with big cliffs and verdant greenery around a small bay. They led me to an area out in the middle of that big white beach, where they thought they had been playing.

I stuck a stick in the ground as a point of reference and began a systematic grid search, dragging my feet in the sand in a 6′ wide lawnmower pattern. After 15 minutes, I was getting no signals , not even trash signals, as this remote beach, I happily discovered, is very clean.

So moments later, when my trusty Garrett AT-Pro went off with a solid gold hit, William got his cross back.
