Found Lost Engagement Ring

In early February, I received a call regarding a lost engagement ring.  The young lady was quite sure she had lost it at Powderhorn Ski Resort (about 45 minutes from home) while en-route to her vehicle through a wooded area. She wasn’t sure if she should wait until snow melt or try and get it located sooner. I didn’t believe waiting til spring would be a good option, considering the high traffic and the condos in close proximity. So we made an appointment and I asked my metal detecting buddy, Mark Rogers, to tag along.

 

We met her on a nice warm winter morning at 9am, on the 22nd of February. She took us for a walk from the Club House area, across the parking lot, up along the side of the road, across a sidewalk and through a grouping of trees to a trail that cut across to a road. She was fairly sure she had lost it in the tree grouping, as she had fallen and stuck her hand in the snow to pick herself up, and then brushed the snow off of her pants. She gave us a reenactment based on what she could remember and we told her we would give her a call if we had any luck finding it. I could tell she was rather skeptical.  Based on the picture she showed us, it was a beautiful ring with large diamonds. I believe she had already decided not to get her hopes up. She headed back down the mountain to town.

 

We started in the area in which she was most certain it had been lost. I had my White’s MXT and Mark, his Fisher’s. He started from the top to the middle of the tree grove and I started from the bottom to the tree grove. As I was working up, he told me the snow was too deep and his machine was just jumping all over the place and he couldn’t get a good reading.  So we agreed that I would locate the signals and he would uncover them. Upon my second best signal, he uncovered the ring. It was so exciting seeing his response and feeling my own! Within a half hour, we were making the call to say we had found it. Kristina was so excited, she turned around and headed back up the mountain to meet us. When she pulled up and saw us, I could see the disbelief on her face. When we showed her the ring, the tears started coming and she was so happy. It is such a great feeling!

Lost Ring in Denver

I received a call from a gentlemen from Denver on a Wednesday. He had lost his ring the Sunday prior. He told me that he had rented a metal detector to see if he could locate it and could not and that I was recommended to him by a local jeweler. I was excited to receive his call and yet cautious as snow was forecast for the requested search day, not to mention the four hour drive, and the snow covered pass to get on site. I have always loved treasure hunts and this was no different. I wanted to be an archaeologist when I grew up but discovered that I didn’t have the patience to uncover my prize with a paint brush!

I met him on Friday to do a search of the area he thought it might be found in. The interesting part of this story is that his back yard is fairly small and directly located behind his home is an adjoining fence with the potential of three other homes and search areas. I was unsuccessful in finding his ring and he and I were both disappointed. We agreed that I would come back out again to look for it. I enjoyed the hunt and the anticipation of any great find, including that which I was hired to find. I hope to make the trip back out and look again before the snow arrives and sticks, and I remain hopeful that one of the neighbor children or local passerby doesn’t happen upon it.

Lost Ring Grand Junction, Colorado

This ring finder can now be found in Grand Junction, Colorado. The move from Palmer, Alaska is a permanent one and with a longer sunny season there will be more time to metal detect.  I am an avid metal detectorist and enjoy the thrill of the hunt.
