I received a phone call approximately three weeks ago in regards to a lost promise ring at Manning Park. After hearing the story and talking to the young lady, in regards to where she believed the ring was lost, and the fact that it was up in the mountains, approximately 2 1/2 hour drive each way, I elected to pass on the search at that particular time, as it was snowing up in the mountains. My van would have a very difficult time even with new winter tires getting there. (Rear Wheel Drive)

I gave her as much information as I could in regards to the fact her ring was safe and nobody would find it and she could probably wait till spring when the snow had melted and easily have seen it. The one thing that bothered me was she did tell me she was very close to the fire pit when she was wiping snow off of a friends  jacket.

That is the kind of movement I’m always looking for as her ring could come flying off due to cold & wet hands.Iit bothered me because it could’ve gone into the fire pit and who knows if they would’ve cleaned that out and the ring gone with it.

I kept an eye on the weather and I noticed we had a window of two or three days of sunny weather and I phoned her and asked if she wanted me to go up and have a look.

She was excited and said yes,  I took the drive up there through the mountain passes with no problems. When I arrived it was sunny and  it wasn’t too cold. I started my search around the fire pit, but had no luck, there was a chance somebody could’ve picked it up while making a snowball and threw it without knowing. I expanded my search area to accommodate that possibility and after a half a day of searching, I had no ring.

Day 2 I knew I had to attack the fire pit. It wasn’t going to be easy as the ash had frozen into blocks and I needed a special shovel that I fortunately carry with me to break the ice and scrape everything into a wheelbarrow where I can search each piece amongst some of the loose ash.

The fire pit was full of iron, lots and lots of nails and pieces of the iron bucket which makes it very difficult to locate a ring. My next thing was to go through everything peace by peace, and after a good hour or more of searching in the wheelbarrow amongst all the ash, I found her ring.!

Sadly, the ring was unrecognizable due to the temperatures of the fire, however, I found out that the young man had insurance on it and now I was going to get the ring back to what it looked like when he first bought it. What a smart young man to get insurance, you can tell by her smile she was so happy to get it back, looking back at it now it was a good thing. I did go up there before spring the fire pit. I’m sure it would’ve been cleaned out before I would’ve got there. I love my job. Such a nice young couple. Happy to be of service to them.

Here’s what it looked like above.
