Recently Mitch was doing some yard work including blowing the yard as well as the large concrete pad his RV was sitting on. Shortly after he returned inside, he realized that his gold chain and an attached gold sailboat charm were no longer around his neck. After a search outside near the RV, the chain was found lodged in a crack between the concrete pad and a concrete step leading away from the pad. Mitch searched the pad and the small yard area but was unable to locate the small gold charm. He was unsure about how the chain came off of his neck but the charm was one that slid onto the chain and apparently that’s how it became separated. Mitch figured that the necklace had come off as he was working under and blowing around the edge of the large RV.

Mitch’s wife Durene found my contact information on a local social media page and Mitch emailed me to find out about my metal detecting services. I was out of town at the time but I told Mitch that we could set up a search as soon as I returned. On the day I returned to town, I already had another search set up for that morning about two hours away and I called Mitch on the way back from that successful search and left him a message that I could search for him that afternoon. I did not receive a return call from Mitch so I decided to stop by his house to see if he and Durene were home. As it turns out when I arrived, Mitch had been pressure washing the RV pad as well as the front sidewalk and driveway and had not seen my call. Mitch took me back behind the fence to the side yard where the RV was stored and I began my ground search for the charm around the RV. Since it appeared that the necklace had been blown just off the concrete pad as Mitch was blowing around and under the RV, he guessed that the charm must have been blown off the pad and further out into the yard. I searched for about 45 minutes with Mitch assisting on the digging but only found a couple of coins (including a 1941 nickel!) and some scrap metal. I had just completed my search around the RV when Mitch, who was behind me standing on the pad, called to me and held up his gold sailboat charm that he had just found in a crack in the concrete pad! He had already searched the pad for the charm but he guessed that when he pressure washed it the charm was pushed up out of the crack. This is the second or third time that the owner I was searching for found his own jewelry! After a happy Durene came out of the RV to hear the good news, she gave me some of her homemade candy.

Taylor was working with his buddies Donald and Matthew on a job site building a new fence. The site was next to a fire station that serves the town of Babcock Ranch, Fl. which is the first solar powered town in the United States and located near Punta Gorda. Taylor was clearing some brush and tossing it into a pile when at some point he realized that his gold and diamond wedding band appraised at about $4000 that he had only had for about eight months had flown off of his finger into the brush and grass. He and his friends searched for the ring two days including raking the grass and cut brush as well as using an inexpensive metal detector but were unable to find his ring. Taylor began searching on line for some help, found me on social media and called me. I normally travel no more than an hour or so from Dunedin in the Tampa area to conduct searches and Babcock Ranch was a little over two hours from my home but I decided to drive down to see if I could recover Taylor’s ring. I also had another search I could do for a lost gold charm on the return home.

I met Taylor at the site, fired up the Minelab Equinox 900, and began the search under Taylor’s direction. I swept a grassy, weedy area next to the fire station in a grid fashion and worked my way towards a very low concrete wall where the fence was being constructed on the other side. I detected some scrap metal pieces including a few screws and washers as well as several rusty pennies over the course of about an hour and even though I had an idea of the VDI number I was looking for on my detector, I was going to dig every surface or near surface target. Taylor and his friends continued to work and watch at the same time especially when I was digging a target. I could tell that Taylor was beginning to get a little concerned because the primary search area was not very large and I was almost finished. I then detected a strong surface target over a  cut grassy area that displayed 36-37 on my Nox 900. I pushed away the loose grass with my pinpointer and there lay Taylor’s shiny ring staring back at me! I called to Taylor who was working close by and told him to come over. He stared down at the ring with a look of surprise and disbelief and then all four of us began to celebrate. Taylor then called Katie who had given him the ring and she was overjoyed with the news. And they are expecting their first child!

Melissa and her family evacuated her home in Seminole. Fl. as powerful Hurricane Milton was threatening the area. Included in their preparations was removing the fish from their aquarium and Melissa had remembered removing her wedding ring and placing it in her jacket pocket to do this. Melissa then made a number of trips to place personal items in their cars before leaving the house. She also walked next door to check with her neighbors to see if they might secure their trash cans. It was dark by that time and as she was walking over she kicked something in the driveway that she thought at the time was a rock. It was sometime after Melissa was at her mother’s home where she had evacuated that she realized that her precious ring was no longer in her jacket pocket! After the threat of the storm was over, Melissa searched her home and yard as well as the edge of her neighbor’s yard for the ring but was unable to locate it. She was also concerned of the possibility that the ring in her pocket got hung up in a tissue also in her pocket that she later threw away.

About three months later, Melissa saw the story of my most recent ring recovery on a local social media page and found out about the metal detecting services I offered. She messaged me and we set up a time for me to search. I met Melissa and after she provided me the details of the loss, I began my search of the yard (which was small with a circular driveway) on the side yard and then moved to the front yard beginning with the strip of grass between the sidewalk and grass. I had only dug a few targets including several pieces of scrap metal and a penny. I did not have the husband’s matching wedding ring to provide me with a good target number to look for on my detector display and the ring was a mixture of platinum and gold so I was going to dig every target close to the surface. As I got close to the driveway I detected a solid surface target that rang up 71-72 on my Minelab Equinox 900 detector. Melissa had just stepped inside her home for a minute and as I probed into the grass with my handheld pinpointer, I spotted Melissa’s beautiful ring nestled well down into the grass and about half buried. I went to Melissa’s door and when she opened it I told her that I think I found what we were looking for! We walked over and I pulled the ring out of the grass where it had laid for over three months and handed it to her and Melissa began crying tears of joy. For me, the first “rush” comes with the find and the second one comes when I give the ring back to its owner. This never gets old!

Phil was playing with his two year old daughter in the backyard of their home in Palm Harbor and in the process of running around with her, his wedding ring flew off of his finger into the thick St. Augustine grass. Phil, who admitted to me later that the ring was loose on his finger, believed the he knew the area where the ring landed in their small back yard so he immediately began a visual search. After he was unable to find his ring, Phil purchased an inexpensive metal detector and searched for his ring but again, was unable to find it. Unfortunately, most people who purchase their own metal detector to find their lost items are unsuccessful because they have never used one previously so they lack the necessary experience.

Phil’s wife Chrissy found me on social media (I share all my recoveries with neighborhood pages) and we arranged a time for me to come to their home to search for the ring. Phil met me when I arrived and directed me to the area where he felt like the ring had fallen. After about a 30 minute search and a few buried targets identified, I was unable to locate the ring so I expanded my search into the opposite direction, sweeping the grass with my detector coil between the vinyl fence and the pool area. After a few minutes more and very close to the pool deck I received a strong and promising surface tone and before I could reach down to probe into the grass with my handheld pinpointer, I saw the ring nestled in the grass! Phil had walked away for just a moment so I called him back over to show him the ring before I picked it up. Needless to say we were both very happy with the discovery!

Paula was walking down the outside stairs of her second floor condo in Safety Harbor when she fell down the last few steps and landed hard and face first on the sidewalk. She had not been using the handrail with her hands full and was badly injured including bruises and cuts to her face and a possible fractured collarbone. After she was helped back into her home, Paula realized that one of her hearing aids was missing as a result of the fall. After receiving medical treatment and returning to her home, Paula’s good friend Carol and a family member helped search for the hearing aid in the area where Paula landed but they were unable to find it. Carol found me through social media and contacted me the next day to see if I could help Paula find her hearing aid.

I arrived at Paula’s condo and realized that the search area was very small but did include under the stairs and several areas with shrubs including shrubs that bordered the complex’s pool fencing. I scanned Paula’s other hearing aid for a reading on my Minelab Equinox 900 detector so that I would know exactly what to look for and as I expected, the signal was very weak due to the very small amount of metal in the hearing aid. I also tested my hand held pinpointer because I quickly realized that I would have to do most of my search with it as there was very little room for my detector coil. I began my search on my hands and knees with the pinpointer in the area of shrubs near the fence because it was in the direction of Paula’s fall and also shook the branches of the shrubs just in case the hearing aid was hanging from one of them. I then searched the shrubs beside the stairs and the leafy area underneath the stairs by probing with the pinpointer but no luck. After about 15 or 20 minutes, I walked up the last several steps and looked down towards the sidewalk where Paula had landed when I noticed several red spots on the left side opposite from the area where I had searched. As it turns out, these were blood spots from Paula’s cuts where she fallen and then tried to get up. Carol and Paula believed the hearing aid to be on the right side of the steps since it was in Paula’s right ear. I began a visual and pinpointer search under the shrubs on the left side and after only about a minute I saw the hearing aid laying on the leaves. Paula was thrilled to have her relatively new hearing aid back in her ear! Paula requested that I not take a picture of her smiling face due to the cuts and bruises suffered in her fall so you have mine instead.

While I was in Texas with my wife Jan for the birth of our second grandson Anson and visiting with his brother Tillman and parents Joe and Madison (our daughter), I was contacted by Michelle from the Weeki Wachee/Spring Hill Florida area in early May who told me that she lost her wedding ring while doing yard work. Even though the ring had been lost in a location that could not be searched by anyone without Michelle’s permission, I asked Michelle if she would like to wait until I returned to Florida to search for her or if she prefer that I try to contact another trusted detectorist to search as soon as possible. Michelle told me that she could wait until my return and because we would be driving back from Texas in three weeks and passing within five minutes of her home, I could search for her then.

At the end of May, we headed back to Florida, stopping several places along the way. The day before we were to pass by Michelle’s home, I contacted her and set up a time to meet her. As we got close to the loss location the next day, Michelle texted to say that something had come up and that she would not be able to meet me for the search. I told her that we would set up another time after I returned home.

Michelle and I were able to set up another search time several weeks later and that day I made the hour long drive with my detecting buddy Jim Facinelli who was going to assist in this search as well as another search for a ring in the cool spring water at Crystal River.

We arrived at Michelle’s home and shortly after, we received some more details about the loss and we began our search. Michelle and her husband had been working on their irrigation system in the left side front yard which involved a lot of digging when she realized that her ring was missing from her finger. She had thoroughly searched the area which was more dirt than grass but had been unable to find it. Michelle’s daughter Christalynn had earlier searched with her own beginners metal detector but had been unable to find her mother’s ring. Jim and I scanned the area for about 45 minutes and dug several coins along with various pieces of scrap metal. There was very little grass for a ring to hide in but that area had seen some vehicle traffic in addition to the irrigation work so the ring could have been pushed further under the ground surface. The loss area was not large and Michelle was certain that she had lost her ring in this area so we gridded it several times and dug every target. I dug a possible gold target near a utility pole and out popped Michelle’s wedding ring from about a two inch depth! I held up the ring to show Jim and we both celebrated. As Michelle and her daughter had gone inside the house to take a quick break from the heat, Jim suggested that we have Christalynn come outside with her metal detector and “find” the ring. We reburied the ring and had Michelle and Christalynn come outside to the spot and Christalynn got a signal on her detector and began digging. She dug up a penny near the ring before she found the ring and proudly handed it to her mother! Thanks to Jim for that great idea and his assistance with the search.

I received a text from Tammy last Saturday evening asking me if I helped people find lost rings on Honeymoon Island, Dunedin Fl. Tammy and her husband live in Illinois and were visiting her sister Becky and parents in Dunedin for her birthday. Earlier that day, they were enjoying some beach time when Tammy removed her wedding ring (white gold and diamonds) to apply sunscreen, either laying it on her towel or in the cup holder of the chair. Several hours later, Tammy and Becky moved their chairs to a less windy location but Tammy didn’t realize that her ring was missing until she had left the beach. She guessed that either the ring had flown off the towel when she shook the sand off or it dropped from the chair when she folded it up. Tammy returned to search for the ring but was unable to locate it before it got dark. Becky posted the lost ring on several neighborhood sites and Tammy had found me and the Ring Finders through an internet search.

I met Tammy and Becky at Dog Beach on Honeymoon Island on Sunday morning. My wife Jan came along to outline grids and for moral support and Becky’s neighbor Chip helped search with an older Garrett detector. They were certain that the ring was lost at their first beach location but the the first grid area was still several hundred feet long by about 75 feet wide (fortunately, tides would not be an issue). I searched this area while Chip searched an area further south. After several hours of finding only pull tabs, bottle caps, and a few coins, I quickly searched Chip’s area again while he moved north of the first search area. I swept some of the north area as well including their second beach location which was easily identified by some beach vegetation before we decided to take a break after about three hours. Tammy was obviously discouraged and had not slept much the night before. She was scheduled to fly back to Illinois at 6am Monday morning.

I went home for about an hour and returned to the beach to renew the search. I swept the first area again and then went further south than I had previously searched. I continued to recover some beach trash as well as coins but I was digging every target. I then moved back to the north search area to work a new grid. After another two hours of searching, I had yet to recover the ring and I needed to leave to meet friends for dinner. As I walked even further north towards the beach access still swinging my Nox, I registered an 11-12 about 4” deep. I had similar targets earlier but dug only scrap. I was so tired of digging with the scoop I just kicked the spot with my foot until I uncovered the target which of course turned out to be Tammy’s ring! Call it just pure luck or maybe divine guidance, but I walked over the exact spot while leaving the beach! At first I just looked in disbelief and then looked around for someone to celebrate with but unfortunately I had the beach to myself.

I texted Tammy a photo of the ring and received an exclamation point filled reply. Coincidentally, my wife and I were to have dinner with friends that evening at a home near where Tammy was staying so I returned the wedding ring to her that evening.
