Cell phone lost while sledding in Thornden Park, Syracuse NY FOUND

  • from Syracuse (New York, United States)

February 2nd 2021 a young man (Phillip) calls me and states that he has lost his cell phone while sledding down the hills in Thornden Park in Syracuse NY.  It’s 9:00 p.m. so I make arrangements to meet him the next day at the park to search for the phone. When I meet Phillip he states that he is from Germany and is here in Syracuse attending the Newhouse School of Broadcasting,  part of Syracuse University.  He and his buddy have never seen so much snow before as in Germany they do get snow but NOT THIS MUCH.  Someone had told him about sledding down the hill here in Thornden Park and that all they needed was a piece of cardboard to make a sled, so off our two friends from Germany go to “play in the snow”.  Well of course while going down the hill he loses his cell phone.  This phone not only is his connection to his mother and father in Germany, but also has important information on it about his studies here in the USA.  If at all possible I must find this phone for him.

While questioning Phillip I found out that he only went down the hill twice before he noticed that he had lost his phone.  After losing his phone using his buddy’s phone he called his phone but they could not here his phone ringing. He then put on his “ear buds” and walked around and was able to “connect” to the phone.  He walked up and down the hill and in doing so “lost” the signal so he had a area about 100′ down the hill by 40′ along the hill that he was quite sure the phone was.  He and his buddy were digging and searching for the phone using the signal from to ear buds when the phone battery went down.  They searched into the night, and then using his buddy’s phone search and found “The Ring Finders” and myself.

It’s the next day that we had another 8″ of snow last night so all signs of sledding and searching had been covered up, but Phillip told me the approximate area that he had sled down, so off I go up to my knees in new and old snow.  We work up and down the hill moving along the area where he was sure he had gone down yesterday.  Lots of “hits” but when dug, they were all below the grass.  Certainly not his phone.  After covering and doing a grid search of the area where he was sure he had slid yesterday, we checked out the “launching” area where he would have stated the slide down the hill.  Still no phone. It’s been about 1 1/2 hour and I’m getting tired and wet, but I have to get his phone tonight if there is any chance of saving it from getting wet inside and “blowing it up”   We then go back down the hill to expand the search both along the hill and further down the hill, and the first search further to the left of where he was sure he wasn’t, BINGO, the phone.

I told Phillip how to resurrect his phone. DO NOT RECHARGE IT YET.  BUY SOME WHITE RICE AND PUT THE CELL PHONE AND THE RICE INTO A ZIP LOCK BAG, SEAL THE BAG AND LET IT STAND FOR 72 HOURS.  Then plug it in, cross your fingers and do a little prayer.  I think his phone will be OK.
