Iraq Veteran Reunited with lost Military Academy Ring (Found by Del Witters)

I got a call from Pete on Sunday asking what the chances were of finding his 1994 West Point class ring on a Portland Beach with a metal detector. My reply, excellent, provided no other detectorist locates it or it’s not a visual find, what are the details. On Saturday, he put his wallet, keys, and ring on his sandals to play with his dogs. At some point the dogs knocked the items off the sandals and when they left he forgot about his ring because it wasn’t visible. When he got home he realized the ring was missing. He tried to find it by sifting the sand with his fingers, no luck. He rented a metal detector but after 3 hours of “hot rock” signals, bottle caps, and a few coins he called it quits and located “The Ring Finders” and my info. Because Sunday was my anniversary and we had plans I agreed to meet him Monday morning. I drove two hours only to find the park closed for administrative reasons. After failed attempts to get access he asked if I could return and we met again on Wednesday at 0630. After getting the lay of the land I started my search. That beach was the most mineralized ground I have ever searched and I had a tough time detecting the quarter I found at 3” and the shallow nickel wasn’t any easier so I slowed my search considerably and investigated every signal. At 40 minutes my CTX indicated a shallow dime so I dropped the scoop in the sand and came up with a beautiful, large, United States Military Academy gold ring!

Pete’s reaction was pure elation and his very generous “Bear Hug” was heartfelt… that’s why I’m willing to travel, in this case a total of 8+ hours, to reunite folks with their treasured and possibly irreplaceable items. As a retired 26 year military veteran myself, this recovery was a little more personal to me – Thank you Pete for the opportunity and your military service!
