Last Saturday, Carl was working around his home in San Mateo County. After a full day of chores, he noticed that his platinum wedding ring was missing. The good news was, he hadn’t left his property all day, so he knew the ring had to be somewhere in the yard. The other good news was, he found RingFinders, the metal detector experts.
Two of us arrived to give Carl’s property a thorough search. In some cases, the recovery takes hours of searching, but not this time. We pulled Carl’s platinum wedding band out of the thick grass on the side of his home within about ten minutes.
Because rings are so dense, when they fall they immediately sink down to the ground level beneath all the blades of grass, where they are practically invisible. Carl’s lawn was healthy and thick, so the ring was completely hidden, even when you looked straight at it. But metal detectors can “see” right through grass, dirt and sand to find missing rings.

I have been a member of The Ring Finders for a couple of years now, and I must admit I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the searches I have carried out for people’s lost items, especially when I am successful!
I do not charge anything to search for people, just a contribution towards my fuel cost, (Diesel is very expensive here in the U.K.) However I do ask for a donation for The Alzheimer’s Disease Society, a charity very dear to my heart as both my mother and aunt suffered from the terrible condition.
On average I get an e mail about once a month from someone looking for help, however probably only about one in five of these enquires lead to an actual search, because of a variety of reasons such as: “I have lost my ring in my car” or “I think its somewhere in the loft”. I am only able to search for lost metal items in open ground i.e gardens, parks, common land, etc. Please be aware that if an item has been lost on Council or Government land permission would need to be obtained from the relevant authority prior to me searching.

While checking-out of The Sundial Resort on Sanibel Island, Mike realized his platinum wedding ring was missing! It had rarely left his finger since his marriage to Erika, ten years ago. But, now, it was GONE!
His best guess was that it was lost at sea… a casualty of playing football on a sandbar, 20-30 feet off the beach. He emailed us a map outlining where he thought it might be, and when the wind and tide were right, I drove out to the island and got to work.
Hours of thoroughly searching the area, in knee-to-waist-deep water, turned up nothing but junk. But, I wasn’t about to give up and returned to give it another go, finding it in the dip between the beach and the sandbar.

Funny thing is, when it happens… when you find yourself staring down into your scoop at that ring… time tends to stop in it’s tracks! You blink a lot, as if to make sure your eyes are working right, and then you just stand there for a minute, in awe.
Minutes later, I’m on the phone for the best part of all… Mike’s reaction when I tell him, “I found your ring”!
The inscription: Love Always, Erika!
(This was my favorite wet find of 2010… 2011 & 2012 will follow.)

I’m very proud of my perfect recovery record thus far as a member of The Ring Finders. The most recent recovery gives me a perfect 4 for 4 record! I must admit, this time it was my detecting buddy who I asked to come along with me that actually found the lost platinum ring we were looking for, but nonetheless the recovery was a success! Being able to make a couple’s St. Patty’s Day extra special sure was nice. I’ll let Sarah tell you the rest of the story in her own words….
My husband was out in our yard doing some gardening including spreading grass seed and pulling up weeds and throwing them over an embankment in a wooded area behind our house. A few hours after finishing the yard work, he noticed that his ring was missing. Even though he wasn’t sure he had lost it in the yard, he immediately went out there searching for hours with no luck. He was even able to rent a metal detector and searched the area and still had no success. He finally gave up and decided that the ring was lost for good. When he told me, I wasn’t sure that a metal detector would pick up platinum so I did a search online for lost platinum ring and I stumbled upon Jim’s blog. I sent him a quick e-mail asking if it would be worth it for him to come out if my husband had already searched with a metal detector. Jim wrote back right away saying that the skill of the detector had a lot to do with the ability to find things, so I figured we’d give him a try. Jim came out about a week later on St. Patrick’s day with his friend Lance. They both brought their metal detectors and after my husband gave them a description of his yard work activities they began searching in what they thought were the most likely areas to find the ring: over in the area where he was throwing weeds and in the area he had been planting the grass. Maybe 15 minutes after they arrived, I started to head out to meet them and my husband said to me “I hope you don’t get your hopes up.” I said I hadn’t, but I really had! I stepped outside and asked if they had any luck yet and they said they had found it already!! It was located in the area where my husband had been planting grass and was under about an inch of dirt. My husband and I couldn’t believe that they had found it so quickly! I think it took longer to write this letter than it took for them to find the ring. I later realized that it was the 5th anniversary of us getting engaged. So five St. Patrick’s days ago he had given me an engagement ring and on this one, he had gotten his wedding ring back! Now St. Patrick’s day is twice as lucky for us. Thanks again Jim and Lance!
Lisa called me on Sunday evening about 9:00 p.m., I was on another call out for Liam at the time. She told me she had lost her wedding set that day and was unsure if it was misplaced or if she had actually lost it at the beach she had visited that day. So I talked with her for a few moments and asked her to describe the area she thought she may have lost the rings. Luckily for me, the beach she described was on my way home from where I was at that time. I was unsure if I could get there that night to look for it or not, it depended on how long the current call I was on took, and I had to work early the next day so I needed my sleep. But the call I was on only took about 25 more minutes and I had time to go look for her rings. I called her and told her I was going to look for them and that I would let her know if I found them. Well let me tell you the place she described to me was perfect, I went to the spot on the beach that she told me of and found an imprint of a beach towel still in the sand. So I may as well start here, I thought. I put my headphones on, turned on my detector and took two swings. Overload! Wow! I scooped the target and carefully sifted two of the the three rings she described, I was so excited I called her immediately. I told her I had recovered two of the three but was sure I had heard the third and would be recovering that one as soon as I got off the phone with her. I did, it was laying about a foot from the others just under the sand. I am so happy I had my phone with me and on while I was searching for Liam’s ring. I met her the next day and returned her rings to her. Lisa told me that the center stone had been in her family a very long time, and that made me even happier that I was able to help her find it. Thank you Lisa!

Well, you just never know … I haven’t had a call for months and suddenly I received two calls in two days from distraught owners who had lost their rings. They found my details after doing a quick google search and coming up with theringfinders.com!
The first job was in Tauranga, which is over 2 hours drive from my location. The couple, Will and Rebecca Cass, had emptied a bag into the garden on private property and the platinum ring dropped out and immediately disappeared into the undergrowth. Before I arrived, they had searched the location for hours and removed a large amount of the leaves and branches. I arrived and carefully scanned the area. There was a lot of rusted iron flakes which made my Garrett Pro Pointer pretty well redundant. I set my Garrett ACE 250 to the jewelery setting and went to work. I eventually made my way to the deck area and there was only enough room to get my arm and the pointer under there. The LED light on the pointer was invaluable for this exercise. I fished out a bottle top, some metal fragments, and finally I started picking up a signal in a hole full of leaves and mud. The LED light caught a glimpse of shinny metal and, bingo! There it was. The owners were absolutely relieved and thrilled and they were extremely generous with a reward!

The second call was a similar case, except they were two white gold and diamond rings which fell out of a bag and were quickly swallowed up by the gravelly volcanic sand that lines the beaches of Lake Taupo. Donnee and Daniel Murray spent a long time searching for them, but finally they gave up hope, until they came across theringfinders.com! I was unable to get there until late the following evening. It was raining, but I find this is a nice quiet time to get on with the job. I was shown an approximate area they could be and within seconds got the first signal. The first ring indicated 5 inches under the sand and I found it after using a sand shovel with holes and my Garrett Pointer. I was surprised it had already gone so deep, but the more the sand got disturbed on the surface, the deeper the ring would work its way down. The second ring was found a couple of minutes later at about the same depth about 30cm away. The owners partner was present and took the rings home to a very, very happy lady!
TESTIMONIAL FROM TAURANGA
Dear Tony
On behalf of my wife and I may I say thanks once again for what you did which was nothing short of a miracle as far as we are concerned. Its more than the hi-tec electronic gear you have, you are actually a ‘ring-finder’ not just a guy with a metal detector. The way you methodically searched and found the ring using a process of elimination was astounding. Your manor and professionalism were also much appreciated, we only wish you could have stayed for lunch! But considering you drove 2 hours each way on your day off to help us because we were on holiday,… we are deeply thankful you responded to our call.
Cheers Tony I we are delighted to recommend your services to anybody who needs anything found!

Sunday night December 4, I am sitting in my bed reading my favorite metal detecting magazine when I hear our phone ring at 10:30 pm. My wife’s mother was expected to call that evening so I assumed that that was who was calling. Within a few seconds I hear my wife walking up the stair talking on the phone. Diane hands me the phone and says it is somebody who has lost a ring. I answer the phone and Chris Tatum is on the other end, he is in the parking lot of a pizzeria where he has just lost his ring. He tells me that he has searched the area around his car but cannot find his ring and was wondering if I could come out that night and look for the ring. There are a couple inches of freshly fallen snow covering the parking lot and the temperature is 11 degrees. I realize that timing is critical because this parking lot will more than likely be plowed first thing in the morning. I let Chris know that I will be at his location in about a half an hour.
I get dressed, start getting my equipment together and then I have to explain to my wife why I am heading out of the house at 10:45 with my metal detectors while snow falling in bitterly cold temperatures. But we both agree that this search has to occur now so out the door I go.
I arrived at the pizzeria and introduce myself and Chris explains how he was wiping snow off his driver’s seat when he heard his platinum wedding band hit the asphalt parking lot. It was quite obvious where he and his wife had searched for the ring without any luck. I prepped my Whites XLT with Bigfoot coil and began my search. I began my search over the areas that they had searched by eyeballing the site. Soon I expanded my search beyond our original search area, still no luck. By this time my hands are numb and I need to get my gloves out. I continue my search beside a concrete wall that is loaded with steel reinforcing where I heard the definite sound of a ring come from my XLT. I carefully dug through the snow and got my hands on Chris’ ring. The ring laying under 3 inches of snow 20 feet away from where I had expected it to be. This search took only 20 minutes but it was a pretty intense 20 minutes due to conditions.
Ring recovered December 4, 2011.

Its been a while since I posted anything on my blog – I just havnt had any calls, for my service. I managed to get a mention in my companies in house newspaper, but despite my best efforts I couldn’t get them to mention The Ring Finders.com or my e mail address, (I guess it must be against company policy). At least they spelt my name correctly !
