Lost/Recovered 14kt Gold Diamond Engagement Ring Delaware Seashore State Park Bethany Beach, Del.

July 31st, 2011 by

On 07/31/11 @ 10:19 am, I received a phone call from a young lady who had lost her 14kt Gold Diamond Engagement Ring on the Beach at the Delaware Seashore State Park Bethany Beach, Delaware. The ring slipped off of her finger and fell into the dry sand while she was applying suntan oil. The sand had been searched for about one hour without any luck before I received the phone call. I arrived at the beach and found that the area of the lost ring had been marked with beach towels. I began my search and with three swings of the detector I received a familiar gold tone. I used my sand scoop to carefully recover the ring and as the sand filtered through my scoop the ring appeared. The young lady gave a cheerful yell as she said “He’s got it, I see it!”.  Another great recovery!

Lost Wedding Ring Found in San Francisco

May 30th, 2011 by
Kathleen lost her wedding ring in San Francisco

Kathleen lost her wedding ring in San Francisco, but we found it for her

Kathleen was gardening at home in San Francisco today when she pulled up a big pile of weeds and tossed them over the fence. Unfortunately, her ring disappeared at the same time. Since she’s been wearing it for 30 years, she definitely wanted to get it back.

We got to Kathleen’s house at about 7pm, hoping we’d be able to find the ring before sunset. But once we looked over the fence, we got worried: five foot tall brush and weeds so thick we wouldn’t be able to walk through them, let alone swing our metal detectors. We really hoped the ring was still on the inside of fence!

Good news: we found the ring within 15 minutes, and it was indeed inside the fence. It’s a beautiful ring, with a gold nugget design. I’m glad we were able to find it. Kathleen did everything right: she made careful note of exactly where the ring came off her finger, she searched very carefully , and when she couldn’t find it she called The Ring Finders!

How I got started in the Treasure Hunting and artifact recovery game.

February 17th, 2011 by

It was Thanksgiving weekend in 1983, I was 9 years old.  We were sitting at the table and my little sister commented on how yellow my grandfathers eyes were, to my recollection that was the start of it, he went to the Dr. the following Monday and they next Friday We were all told that Gramps had Pancreatic Cancer(this is the Reason why I donate 25% of all my reward money to the American Cancer Society)…the next 6 months were kind of a blur for me.  Gramps was in and out of the Hospital taking Chemo and what not and he lost a lot of weight, drastic amounts.  he was out in the yard working on the Motor home one Saturday and when he came in for lunch he noticed his Masonic ring was gone, he had lost so much weight it just slipped off.  Gramps died 6 weeks later and from the time he lost his ring, myself and my cousins and grandmother spent all our free time looking for his ring so he could be buried with it.  Well needless to say we failed.  Grandma rented a Metal detector for a week back then and no one really knew how to operate it.  from that point on, I remember very clearly, I vowed to myself that one day I was going to be a Treasure Hunter and help People find their lost valuables….fast forward 25 years to October 2009, My Grandparents house goes up for sale “By Owner” I thought “WOW, I would totally love to buy that house”  after all I grew up there.  I called the Owner and got a tour of it and really wanted to buy it, however the owner decided to take it off the market and wait for the housing market to rebound a bit.  I was telling my grandmother about it and she said, “Well sweetie, if you can buy that house, maybe you can find your grandfathers Masonic ring”…then it hit me like a ton of bricks, that was the whole reason I ever got into Metal detecting and treasure hunting.  I called the Home Owner back a couple months later and told her the story and she seemed a bit reluctant, said she would have to think about it….The idea of being so close, yet so far away from a ring that not only my Grandmother would treasure, but myself as well, not just as a grandson finding a grandfathers long lost Masonic ring, but also as now I am a Mason…since the last time I spoke with the home owner my Grandmother has since passed on…How will this story end, will the ring be lost forever?……To be continued

METAL DETECTOR HIRE PERTH

November 21st, 2010 by

Some people will hire a metal detector from a detector shop here in Perth. The shop only hires out an underwater machine which is based on weekly rental of about $200, which is kind of expensive. You then need to acquire a scoop and then work out how to operate the detector. The real work for a novice is then being able to hunt in the water !

I think it’s much easier for someone to hire me instead !!

Thanks,

Tony.

Lost gold and diamond wedding ring, South Beach, Fremantle

November 21st, 2010 by

I got a call yesterday from Melissa who told me she has lost her gold and diamond wedding ring.

The ring came off when she was playing with her children……I know this scenario well. Young children hold onto Mum’s arms and when they drag their hands down someone’s arm then valuables are often stripped away.

I spent about 3 hours this morning looking for the ring but conditions were really poor in the water. I plan on looking again this week as the weather and early summer return.

I did find one of those *^%!#@ stainless steel rings which I really hate. These type of rings are popular with some people for reasons lost on me. They look like white gold but closer inspection reveals them for what they are !!

If anyone local has found this ring then please contact me so that we can get this ring back to the original owner.

Stay tuned on this one….”lost” is a temporary condition.

Newspaper story

November 17th, 2010 by

A local newspaper contacted me the other day asking if I’d like to do a story on my “ring finding” hobby. This is definitely a great way to promote TheRingFinders and will no doubt generate quite a few requests to look for people’s lost valuables.

I met up with one of their photographers at a local beach, detector in hand and we managed to get some decent photo’s.

The free newspaper goes out to about 50000 homes and businesses, of which most are located in close proximity to the busy beaches and river. I will post further details when the article is published and possibly a link to the actual story.

I encourage anyone to jump at the chance if they are approached by any media company to do a story as it gets great publicity.

Well it’s a 105F today so I’m off to the beach and crystal clear Indian Ocean waters. I hope you guys in the Northern Hemisphere aren’t freezing your butts off too much.

Thanks for reading,

Tony.

Estate and Property Search for Gold and Silver…Florida!

November 13th, 2010 by

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have the opportunity to search for hidden treasure? To know that gold and silver were stashed somewhere and you were the one to be asked to look for and recover it? How do you begin a search like that? Where do you start? What tools and detectors will you use? How much do you charge for your service? And who will help you put it all together?

Since joining Chris Turner’s directory of TheRingFinders I have received a variety of calls asking me to help locate things like rings, keys, knives, pulleys, coins, necklaces, pendants, and most recently–Gold Bars!! I expect calls to look for the usual lost items but this call caught me by surprise. Right away I knew that I needed to call Chris Turner and ask him a ton of questions and figure out what my next steps should be. After talking to Chris and getting his advice I felt allot more confident that if the gold was there then I would have a much better chance of locating it.

56 pounds of silver dimes!

And so began my first Estate Search. The deceased had died suddenly and left evidence that he was prepared for whatever crisis that the government or economy would send his way. There were dozens of guns and ammunition and also documentation that he had purchased gold and silver. He lived a very secluded life and had his own water source and a large garden. And even though someone broke into the house three days after the man had passed away and rummaged through all his belongings we still felt there was a good chance we could find the gold if it was still there.

The first day we began our search in the house. We checked all the usual places people hide things and even places that would have made great hiding places but we found nothing. On day two we decided to look the outside of the house over including the yard and some of the sheds. That is when we stumbled onto an old rusty bucket of silver dimes! The bucket was so heavy that when we tried to pick up the bucket it came apart and literally thousands of dimes went spilling over the ground. You can just imagine our excitement and the rush we felt as we stood there and stared at that pile of silver dimes! I grabbed a five gallon paint bucket to put the coins in and at the end of the day, when we weighed the bucket, we had 56 pounds of silver dimes!

We started day three with renewed energy and hope of finding more caches and valuables as there was a lot more of the property to look over yet. We spent most of the day searching the sheds and garden areas thinking that there had to be more buried somewhere. After hours of searching outdoors it was getting really hot and we needed to stop for lunch and a much needed break. As we sat eating our lunch I got to thinking that the downstairs needed to be gone over one more time. (The upstairs apartment had been cleaned out by a cleaning service the estate had hired and all that was left downstairs was a lot of old paint cans, tools, lumber and the kind of junk that people normally have in their garages or basements.) After lunch we headed downstairs to give it the “fine tooth comb” going over! Not 10 minutes into our search we came across an old paint can that looked every bit the part of just an “old can of paint.” We pried the lid off and opened it up to find–there staring up at us were the tops of three money bags tied off and four rolls of what looked like silver dollar coins. Once again you can just imagine the feelings and emotions as we carefully pulled out the contents and laid it all out to count and take pictures! That “old can of paint” held over 600 silver half dollars–Walking Libertys, Benjamin Franklins and Kennedys, plus 85–1 Troy oz. silver rounds!!

All of a sudden those old paint cans had our full attention! Stash number three was located not 10 minutes later only this time there was a large bar of some kind in the bottom of another can and it was wrapped in paper. We thought, “Could these be the gold bars we were originally looking for?”

As we slowly pulled out the contents and laid them gently on the floor we were stunned to see 60 more 1–Troy oz. coins and a 100 oz. bar of .999 pure silver!! And even though it was not the gold bars we were hired to find, our hearts were still pounding like we found the mother load! And all this was found in the “junk” that was left behind by the cleaning crew!

That evening I called Chris Turner and as we discussed the exciting events of the day we realized that there was definitely more places that needed looking into. Chris said he would love to fly out and help us finish up the search and that was all I needed to hear. We invited Chris to “Come on down to sunny Florida” and the next day I picked him up at the airport!

We spent three more day trying to figure out just where the old gentleman hid his treasures. In our search we even found a book that was titled “How to Hide Anything”! We found old letters and photos that helped us put together a bit of his life and gave us some clues. It was neat to uncover key facts and details that helped us confirm the old gentleman had indeed bought gold and silver! In the end we were exhausted but very content in what all we were able to find. Like 90 pounds of silver and an experience that will last a lifetime!

Thanks again to Chris Turner and TheRingFinders for giving us the amazing opportunity to search for that which was hidden and stashed away. We may never know just where the gold really went. Did the person who broke into the house before the cleaners take it? Did the cleaners throw it out with the rest of the trash? Questions we may never have the answers to.

What To Do When You Lose Your Ring

September 6th, 2010 by

As Ring Finders, we get a lot of calls to recover jewelry soon after it was lost. Unfortunately, some people inadvertently make it harder to find their jewelry after they lose it. Here are some tips to help recover your ring, earring, necklace, watch or other jewelry:

  1. The first thing to do is STOP. Look around, notice where you are, and what landmarks are right near by. If you are at the beach, are you near a lifeguard station, cabana, boardwalk or trash can? At a park, are you near a light pole, bench, tree or volleyball court? Unfortunately, too many people can only say, “I lost my ring on Baker Beach” which is hundreds of acres in size, and far too large to search.
  2. Next, retrack your steps. When do you last remember wearing your jewelry? What is the last thing you remember doing? For example, it is quite common to lose a ring after applying lotion or washing your hands. Earrings and necklaces can slip off during sports, while changing clothes, or while arranging picnics and blankets.
  3. Make a specific list of the places you have been since last seeing your ring.
  4. Now you are ready to search.

When you search for your item, be gentle. Tell everyone to walk around slowly, and search with their eyes. Avoid using rakes or other tools, as far more items are dragged into cracks, drains, holes, etc. by inexperienced searching than are recovered that way. You cannot recover what you do not see!

Do you have a smart phone? Open up the map, drop a pin on your location, and send the pin to a friend. This will save the GPS coordinates of your location so we can go right to that same spot later. This is VERY important on large beaches.

At the beaches in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Soquel, Aptos, Capitola, Monterey and Carmel, we commonly recover items as deep as 6 or 8 inches, even when they were lost that day. The ring will usually start about half an inch under the sand, but get pushed deeper as it gets stepped on by searchers. While our equipment can find items up to about 10-12 inches, recoveries that deep are much harder than those on the surface. If you know where the item is lost, and cannot see it, call us quickly!

At parks in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, lost items usually remain on the surface, hidden in the grass or ground covering. Our advice is the same: Walk the area slowly and gently, using your eyes to do the work. Many items can be recovered through careful visual searches. Avoid rakes or other tools: we have seen small items tossed ten feet through the air when they catch on a a rake tine, then the rake hits a bump. Sproing!

If you do not find your item, do two things quickly:

  • Post a description of your item, and where you lost it, on Craigs List.
  • Contact Ring Finders.

We have successfully recovered jewelry of every description all up and down the San Francisco Peninsula. People have contacted Ring Finders from San Jose, Santa Clara, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Redwood City, San Mateo, San Francisco, Sausalito, Santa Rosa and Mill Valley. We work at parks, schools, private property (with permission) and businesses. We’ve also done beach recoveries in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Soquel, Aptos, Capitola, Monterey and Carmel.

If you have lost a ring or other jewelry in the San Jose-San Francisco area, contact me. We work on a reward-only basis. My daughter and I frequently hunt together, increasing your chances of recovery. Click here to read more stories about finding lost rings.

Good luck!
